This is the chick from nest 184. It enjoyed the undivided attention of its parents (because his sibling disappeared early on, predator maybe?), it was treated for Diphtheria when it was little, and it weighed a fabulous 6.2kg on 8 Feb 2016, head size 144mm - making it a boy. That was our last sighting until he was found dead on a beach in Oamaru, mauled by a dog on 23 Feb - giving him 2 weeks swimming in the ocean. He did not weigh much, a mere 4.3kg and probably come ashore to rest. We could have picked him up and fattened him to give him a second chance - but instead he met up with a dog out of control that killed him.
Why was this dog on the beach? Because the people in Oamaru fail to keep the beaches safe for wildlife. So another beautiful penguin is gone. RIP.
