Welcome to Penguin Rescue
Penguin Rescue is a charitable trust operating from the lighthouse at Moeraki, North Otago, New Zealand. Volunteers care for two colonies by monitoring the breeding and survival of Yellow-eyed penguins as well as rehabilitating sick, injured and starving Yellow-eyed penguins and other species such as Little penguins, Snares Crested penguins, Fiordland Crested penguins, Rockhopper penguins and the occasional Royal penguin. All donations are used to further this work.
Articles in the Otago Daily Times:
Penguin Rescue has featured in two articles in the Otago Daily Times on Saturday 11 March 2017 with a story about juvenile yellow-eyed penguins returning for their annual moult: hope for the future of the colony with some of these 1-year olds hopefully starting to breed in 6 months time.
The second article on the same day talked about the problems that a surplus of adult males can cause in a colony.
Our main sponsor is New Zealand King Salmon who provide us with salmon smolt for our sick, injured and starving penguins throughout the year. Thank you for your support and help - you are true penguin heroes!
In November 2015 Speight's Environmental Fund donated $4440 to create 12 new breeding sites for yellow-eyed penguins at Moeraki. Thank you! The penguins have started to move in and are loving them!
